Chapter Eight

Charlie wasn’t sure what he was doing, sitting there at the kitchen table with Ross and David with a mug of hot coffee, steaming and untouched on the table in front of him. He sat on the chair provided, but he kept his hands firmly tucked between his legs while he stared at the mug, his back hunched, wondering why he was even there.

He’d just told his mate that he hated him in front of the entire pack. Didn’t that mean he was out? Maybe Ross and David were just being good hosts until Roarke got here, handed David his backpack, and basically told him to be on his way.

The other omegas were avoiding the kitchen, maybe because it was too awkward to be around Charlie after what he did.

“I’m sure your brother will be all right,” Ross said, startling Charlie out of his self-pity session. “He had to be strong to have survived on his own so far. I mean, you were with him, but you were both still out in the world by yourselves.”

So were pretty much all omega luna werewolves in the world, and Charlie had also been kidnapped by Tom and his men in Bud’s pack, proving just how he couldn’t take care of himself even when he had Derek with him, but Charlie wasn’t going to point that out.

“Thank you,” he said instead, and then he went back to looking at his reflection in the dark mug.

Ross looked at David, and they seemed to be communicating about what to do about Charlie. There were some hand signals and whispers, but Charlie stopped looking at them, so he wasn’t going to bother with anything that they were doing.

God. What if those alphas killed his brother because he hadn’t traded himself? But Lucas was right. They might’ve slit his throat in front of Charlie anyway just for fun if he’d been allowed to turn himself over.

He couldn’t blame Lucas for seeing things rationally when he’d been unable to.

“Hey,” David said, and his hand was on Charlie’s shoulder.

Charlie looked up, and he was shocked to see a sympathetic expression on the man’s face.

There was no judgment or anger there at all.

“We haven’t been a pack for very long, but we’ve already handled a couple of scary situations. The alphas here are good, intelligent men. They’ll do whatever they can to help you and your brother, and so will the omegas.”

Charlie wanted to start crying all over again, but he figured he used up his yearly allowance for that before he just looked like an overemotional wuss, so he bit his lips together, swallowed over the painful lump in his throat, and nodded.

“Do you—” He cleared his throat, and when he spoke again, his voice didn’t sound so scratchy. “Do you think Lucas will be—”

He stopped abruptly when Ash walked into the kitchen. Charlie recalled how he’d fought the man so hard to try and run right into danger, like a complete idiot, and he had to turn away.
